I’ve learnt that running a business is a journey filled with wins, losses, and priceless lessons, so here are the 10 most valuable ones I’ve learnt:
📌 Cash Flow is King: I track every amount that comes in and goes out using simple tools like Bumpa and QuickBooks to monitor my finances daily and minimize credit because a profitable business can still die of cash flow problems if customers delay payments, expenses are poorly managed, or there’s no reserve.
📌 Relationships are Currencies: I network intentionally and follow up with my clients, partners, and even suppliers. A simple “checking in” message goes a long way.
📌 Setting up systems & structures improves focus: When I automate repetitive tasks (such as invoicing, payment reminders, bookkeeping, order management, etc), I’m able to free up my time and brain for strategy, not administrative tasks.
📌 Consistency outperforms motivation: I create a weekly content, sales and personal development routine that I can stick to, even on tough days.
📌 My brand is bigger than my logo: People mostly remember how I made them feel, not just my brand colours and logo, so I always choose to deliver an excellent customer/client experience.
📌 Feedback drives growth: I ask every customer/client how their experience has been interacting with me, so I know how to serve them better.
📌 Don't chase every trend: I intentionally choose to focus on strategies that align with my business goals, not just what’s trending on social media.
📌 Business numbers reveal real insights: I track my income & expenses, profit margins, and the cost of customer acquisition monthly, which helps me know my numbers. With the insights generated, I’m able to make data-driven decisions that can save me money and increase my revenue.
📌 Invest in learning: I dedicate within 2-3 hours a day to either reading, listening to podcasts, or taking courses in my field.
📌 Rest is a business strategy: I schedule relaxation time weekly because I’ve observed that a burnt-out entrepreneur can’t serve anyone.
These are a few of the lessons I’ve learnt. I hope you found them valuable and will apply them to your business.
